The Big Brother Of The Tainan Underground

At the early stage of master Ching Hai’s preaching, She always found time to visit prison inmates. Besides comforting and encouraging them spiritually, She also shared with them biscuits and candies. Due to the longing of sentient beings around the world, Master has become increasingly busy, and constantly travels and preaches abroad. Although She no longer has time to visit prisons, Her concern for prisoners persists. She has instructed our fellow initiates to visit them on Her behalf when they have time. Initiates who used to be prisoners have been requested to go along to encourage the inmates with inspiring stories of their own conversions from evil to goodness.

For this reason, brother Wu was also asked to join such a trip. Unexpectedly, when the organizing brother explained the trip’s objective and asked him to present a speech in the prison, he refused abruptly on the spot. He continued to reject later requests as well. His fear was that, after speaking in the prison, he would be laughed at and would lose face in the event that he should decide to join the gangster circle again. He also found many excuses, like being too shy to speak in public , in order to turn down the requests. The organizing brother had no option but to report the situation to Master. In order to help him understand the holy meaning of this work, Master asked someone to relate the following message to him: “This is the last opportunity in your life to do this job. You must seize this chance, and remember your mission. When you go to fulfill your assignment, be humble at heart, and absolutely refrain from being arrogant.”

Upon receiving Master’s instructions, brother Wu dared not refuse anymore. To accomplish the job perfectly, and to avoid stage fright, he practiced frequently before his wife and son who acted as his audience. The response to his speeches was always “It is awful!” After several attempts, he was ashamed to torture his wife and son any longer. He could only wait until midnight when no one was around, and then stealthily go outdoors to practice his speech to the light pole. And whenever he had time, he would meditate at home, praying to Master to bless him and grant him inspiration.

One day, he felt thwarted and complained to his wife, “I don’t think I am going, because until now my practice is still far from satisfactory!” His wife rebuked him, saying, “This is an assignment from Master, how can you refuse to go? I see you are usually very talkative. Why can’t you speak now that you have the opportunity to express yourself?”

Since it was Master’s assignment, he dared not complain any more. Instead, he rushed to meditate and pray for Her help. On the next day, the organizing brother conveyed another message: “Master said that your wife may also give a speech to the female inmates.” Upon hearing this, his wife’s face turned green, and her nervousness was no less intense than brother Wu’s.

Early the next morning, brother Wu and the working members arrived punctually at the Taipei Prison. Cordially, the prison staff led them to the VIP Room for a brief rest; then they split up into two groups and went to the male and female wards respectively. This trip induced very deep emotions in brother Wu. Previously, whenever he went to a prison, he entered as a prisoner. However, this time he came as a VIP lecturer. Events in this world are truly ever changing and unpredictable. On the way, he recalled some fragmented memories of his life in prison, and without being aware of it soon reached the lecture venue.

When brother Wu went onto the stage and began to speak, the inmates stared at him with hostility and indifference. Even the applause sounded mechanical. An indescribably strange atmosphere pervaded the venue, as if invisible forces were oppressing him and making him speechless. Immediately, he prayed for Master’s blessing, and his mind was stabilized. He described his whole life in detail to the inmates: how he had sunk into gangster society, how he had been converted to goodness and pursued spiritual practice, and how he eventually met master Ching Hai.

As time went on, the atmosphere gradually began to change; the inmates started to listen with great interest and attention, and their expressions also became more cordial. When brother Wu concluded his speech, he received warm applause from the whole audience, which seemed to convey their encouragement and recognition. Some inmates took the initiative of helping the work team clear the venue. Several inmates who knew brother Wu even approached and greeted him. One of them rushed forward saying, “Hello, brother boss! I will surely visit you at Suma Ching Hai’s Center when I am released.” Brother Wu delightedly expressed his welcome.

After this first speech in the prison, brother Wu’s blissful feeling could not be described in words. He never imagined this meaningful mission could be accomplished so smoothly and successfully. For him, it was an incredible challenge . Without Master’s admonition, he could not possibly have gathered the courage and strength to rectify his undesirable quality of declining to do good deeds and benefit others. Furthermore, he had conquered his stage fright.

The most precious lesson that brother Wu learned from this was that he could always feel the bliss of being one with Master during such missions, and experience Her selfless and almighty love. For instance, when going to the Tainan Prison to give a speech, he kept shedding tears in the car until he felt embarrassed. He wondered: “I didn’t shed a single tear when being punished severely for many days in the prison before. Why am I behaving like this now? Perhaps it is like Master once said that our soul knows we are now on the right path, so it cries due to extreme bliss!

When brother Wu made a speech at the Jiayi Prison, another initiate observed a strong light bathing him as he was on stage. He looked much younger in the light, and Master’s manifestation body was standing behind him. No wonder brother Wu always feels that, the more work he does that benefits others, the happier and more relaxed he feels both physically and spiritually, and the more his guilt feelings are eliminated. So, it turns out that Master’s manifestation body is always blessing him and cleansing his karma. This story testifies to the truth of Master’s words: “When helping others, we are actually helping ourselves.”

The application for brother Wu to present a speech at the Hsinchu Youth Prison encountered difficulties. The local fellow practitioners had been applying for a long time, without being approved. Once, when brother Wu spoke at the Hualien Low Security Prison, several inmates advised him, “Brother boss, you should pay a visit to the ‘Hsinchu Youth Prison.’ The situation there is very serious. Tell them the story that you told us today; it will surely touch many of them, and lead them back from the wrong path.” This loving request intensified brother Wu’s wish to visit the Hsinchu Youth Prison.

Perhaps sincerity really worked, or perhaps it was Master’s fantastic arrangement operating invisibly in the background. Mr. Ma Ying Jiu, Minister of the Justice Department was inspecting the Swallow’s Nest (Yan Cao) Prison where he coincidentally met brother Wu, who was making a speech there. Minister Ma shook hands with him and encouraged him cordially. Shortly afterwards, the fellow initiates from Hsinchu received permission from the Youth Prison regarding the lecture application. It happened that Minister Ma had personally called the Hsinchu Youth Prison instructing them to invite brother Wu to give a speech. Fortunately, the Formosan Government is very wise and really cares for prisoners, allowing its youth who have gone astray to have the blessing of developing affinity with a living enlightened Master.

A chain of presentations by brother Wu has occurred in prisons throughout the province. As brother Wu is inclined to getting carsick, long distance travel is agonizing for him. The occasional recurrence of his chronic ailments also aggravates his exhaustion. Once when he was traveling to Yilan to make a speech, he was complaining within about being too tired. However, in the car, he heard a brother recalling when Master wandered and preached everywhere in earlier times. For the sake of saving sentient beings, Master camped anywhere necessary, and did not even have a Center in which to stay and preach. Overcome by remorse, tears rolled down his cheeks. Immediately, all the grumblings in his heart disappeared completely.

So far, brother Wu has presented speeches in prisons in Taipei, Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, Swallow’s Nest (Yan Cao), Jiayi, Tainan, Yilan, Hualien, and Green Island (Lu Dao), as well as the Hsinchu Youth Prison. He receives an overwhelming welcome everywhere he goes. After each talk, he always begins to wonder, “Where is the next opportunity for me to redeem my sins?” He truly feels that real happiness can only be found in doing work that serves and benefits others.

God Takes Care of Everything – part 2

Actually I don’t need anything. After all, I realize I need nothing. Finally, we have no desires anymore. If we meditate more and more, finally we know that we don’t need anything. But even if we don’t need anything, God will see to it that, every necessary thing we will have in life. I think as you meditate along, day by day, you have also noticed this miracle. Every day is a miracle for us, and we’re happier and more loving every day. That is the best gift from God.

If He gives us also financial blessings, it’s all right. If He gives us something like loving relationships as a blessing, it’s all right. If He gives us more houses, more cars, we accept. Everything God gives is all right. We don’t go on to say, “Oh God, I don’t want material things. This is not what I want.”  It’s okay. If He gives us anything, that’s all right. And we share with everyone else, and this is okay.

That’s how the world will become a paradise. Everyone shares with each other. Everyone becomes happier. Then no one will want to steal from the neighbor, to hurt the neighbor, or to do anything else; because everyone will be happy. That is the future vision of our planet. That’s what we should always try to strive to achieve.

One day it will be so. Let’s pray for that. If it is not so, at least the world of our own environment is peaceful, is happy, and is harmonious. Yes, our world with our husbands, wives, our neighbors, our children – this is our world, our planet. It’s always blissful, happy and harmonious, at least. That is a world that is important to us too, because our world is the most important foundation. Without our world, the big world, the big universe doesn’t exist. Without one brick of this world, the big world would not exist. The world exists by many bricks put together, so every brick is important.

Our small world – our small unit of family, of friends, of neighbors, is very important. That’s why if everyone of us takes care of our small world then the big world becomes peaceful alone. No need for anyone to go to Geneva and have a big meeting, drink a lot of champagne and coffee, and eat a lot of beef in order to talk about world peace. If every unit of the family takes care of its inner peace, if it gets in contact with God and gets this everlasting, unconditional love, then the world will have peace. There’s no need to talk. That is an ideal picture, ideal vision for our planet, and for every other planet in this universe.

That’s what is God’s will. That’s what God wants us to understand. It doesn’t matter what, doesn’t matter how long it takes us to understand, God will allow the time, the instruments, the information and the way. God will make the way. God will provide the way for us, as long as it’s necessary for us to understand these fundamental things about our lives and its connection with the universe.

We have an eternity to learn, but we can have it right now. That’s what we have through the method of the Light and the Sound. We have it immediately. Otherwise, we could wait and wait through mistakes, through miseries, through sorrows and through transient happiness until the day we learn.

That’s why God sends someone, some messenger, to remind us that we can have it quickly and immediately; as from ancient times it has always been so. It’s better if you don’t wait, you’ve already got it. But tell your friends, if they want to wait for eternity, it’s all right with God too. [Laughter] God has a lot of patience, far too much!

With this inner meditation and contact, we will soon discover that everything is arranged, everything is okay under the sun. God takes care of every minor detail of every being’s life. That’s why we’re happy. That’s why we are satisfied. That’s why all the sorrows and miseries in this world cannot affect us; because we know the Truth, the one and only Truth, the solid Truth, that God takes care of everything.

So, I think we have to thank God every time that God gives us the opportunity to learn the fastest way, to understand the Truth, which erases all of our miseries; because the Truth really will set us free. The only thing that sets us free is the Truth. If we don’t know that, we always worry. We always feel terrible: “Why is there misery? Why is there someone troubled? Why is there a disaster?” Then, because we don’t know, we worry all the time and we try to take care of every little thing.

But we can never take care enough, because everything goes with the universal plan, and we are just a small particle of the cosmos. We always worry like we are God. We try to arrange the world’s peace. We try to do everything in our lives in order to achieve what we think we must. Then we forget, only God’s will will be done, not ours: because we don’t know anything.

Only when we meditate on God – directly contact with God through the Light and the Sound, then we know. We know everything without even learning from anyone, without reading books, without reading newspapers. We understand deeply, profoundly and everlastingly. You know everything if you meditate regularly and diligently. There’s nothing I need to teach you, nothing anyone needs to teach you at all, because you are your own Master. Everyone has God inside and everyone knows that.

The more we come back into our own wisdom and Master Power, the more we know. It’s a very natural way of teaching. It’s not teaching by verbal language. It’s teaching from inside. It’s so simple. We feel sorry that the worldly people don’t know. It’s so simple like the air we breathe, like the water that we drink. The Truth and the way to the Truth are so simple; but the worldly people, they are so used to complications. They are used to expensive things and hard to get things. So, when anything is offered so simply, quickly and unconditionally, they don’t understand.

You see how the people work in the world. They work eight hours, ten hours, fifteen hours, eighteen hours, just for what? Just to have a roof over their heads, just to have two or three meals a day, a few clothes to wear, and maybe a vehicle to move around in order to work. They work so hard for these very basic, minimum necessities of life. People are used to hardship. That’s why people cannot believe in anything that is free, anything that is simple, anything that is so direct and unconditional.

That’s why it’s our duty, if we want to take this duty, to remind the people and to try our best with all the loving kindness that we receive from God to make people realize that the best things are always simple and always unconditional. We prove it by our living standard, by our moral quality, by our loving kindness which is visible to everyone. We must show God’s love through our way of living, through our own behavior, through our devotion and love to God, and through our devotion, love to all humankind,  not by verbal languages, but by examples.

God Takes Care of Everything – part 1

Every time we meditate, we thank God first, we pray for the less fortunate, and then we remember God with all the sweetness and devotion. That is our duty – very simple, very pure and very effective. Then everything else will come along, without even asking.

You have so experienced? [Audience: Yes.]  Me too. I never ask that He gives me talent to do the paintings. I never ask that He gives me talent to design the clothes or to design the jewelry so that I can take care of myself financially and help the other people as well. I never ask anything but everything just comes, and sometimes too quickly. I have to organize myself in order to receive all the blessing without wasting any.

The more we meditate, the fewer questions we have. Even some questions are not important anymore. After we meditate, we know that nothing is so important and we just fell happy and blissful. When we’re happy and blissful, nothing matters, really; and we don’t think with the mind so much.

When a person is happy, even at a very mundane level – two persons falling in love, between a man and a woman – you still feel very happy and blissful. You don’t care where you still feel very happy and blissful. You don’t care where you stay, what you eat, what kind of clothes you wear, or what kind of comfort or discomfort you have. It really doesn’t matter anymore.

Similarly, we become even more blissful and happier if we are intoxicated inside. Then we don’t have any more questions really, we don’t care. Even if we don’t know too many technologies in the world, what is the newest invention, who is the newest movie star, and what is the newest building in the world, we’re still not affected by anything. We’re just happy, with Love from God alone.

That is the purpose of our lives – to find this Love, and then we’re satisfied. All of you know this already, so I don’t think I should talk too much. Without this Love from God, we’re just miserable. We continue to be miserable all the time, keep wanting, talking, and greedy. We take all kinds of harmful drugs, sometimes alcohol and all kinds of things in order to make ourselves happy. But then we’ll be worse, we’ll have more trouble because we don’t have the true happiness.

That’s why we must meditate on God; and if we cannot, the Master Power always gives us someone – some messenger, in order to guide us, help us to remember how to meditate on God correctly. Meditate on God, otherwise you’ll meditate on money, you’ll meditate on girlfriends or boyfriends. It’s also meditation, but different effect – bad effect. [Laughter]

A lot of people meditate on different things. The businessman, he meditates on his enterprise. The politicians, they meditate on their reputations and careers. The womanizer, he meditates on beautiful girls, and things like that. So, it’s different concentration. Concentration we all have already. The only thing we have to do is to change the object of concentration.

Instead of meditating on all these ephemeral things, like money, fame and ephemeral pleasures of this world, we just switch to meditation on God. Then everything else will come along, even beautiful women will come too, [Laughter] money and everything.

I did not come to God for money or for fame. But because I’m so concentrated on God, He gives me everything; and that is the proof of my concentration, that is the proof of my devotion to God, and that is the proof for you and anyone else. That you know, seek you first the Kingdom of God, and everything else will come to you. The money I make – it’s like it comes from heaven. I don’t even do much work.

The people outside, sometimes they work a lot and they don’t earn that much money. I can’t spend all this on myself. I give it to other people, or sometimes buy some Centers for people to meditate together. It depends on what is requested at that moment. So really, if we always devote our lives and concentrate our love to God, everything we need will come. Everything, absolutely everything, without effort. I make no effort. You know how long it takes me to paint a picture, or how long it takes me to design clothes? Everything comes along just because I don’t care for these things. I just care for God and then everything belongs to God. If I care for God, everything belongs to me too – very simple and logical.

You remember the story of a king in India? When he gave everything in his possession to the people, they could come and take whatever they wanted. Everyone came and took this. They wondered about the lamps, and took some jewelry. Some people tried their clothes on and some people took the cutlery or silver or golden vessels, anything like that. Everyone was so happy to take something of their own taste, and they thought their possessions were very beautiful and precious treasures from the king. But they only had one or two things of his whole possessions, but not all. One girl, she came straight to the king, and she said, “I want you,” and everything belonged to her – the whole kingdom and the king himself.

The same thing happens to us when we only want God and nothing else; everything else will belong to us, definitely, hundred percent. I am a living proof. I am always happy because God always looks after me. He never leaves me. Anything that I really think I need, I will have.

An Interview with Mr. John Robbins – part 4

Interviewer:  I agree with you. The members in our Association all over the world have been doing a campaign on Alternative Living, trying to bring the word to people to associate compassion with our diet choices.

John:  People today are very removed from animals and if they have images, they are of family farms and animals running around on the farm. Modern meat production has become something totally institutionalized and utterly dominated by the profit motive and a true violation of the human heart’s need to live in integrity with the well-being of other forms of life.

Interviewer: So one last question to you on that note is in terms of your own spiritual motivation in life. We all meditate in our Association but a lot of people have different forms of practice. What is your secret to success in spiritual harmony?

John:  Well, I meditate also. I do everything I can to quiet my mind, open my heart, and to be fully present and tuned to the higher wisdom of life and to the instinct for goodness and wellness in everyone. I want to respond to it, I want to welcome it, I want to honor it. I think that there is some good in everybody and if I can look for that, then I can be a place in which their own spirit, their own joy, their own sense of contribution and gifts can come forward. Then I am happy.

Interviewer: John you walked away from a very large empire, the Baskin Robins kingdom. For the viewers that may not know Baskin Robins, it is the largest ice-cream chain in the world, more than 5,000 stores worldwide, promoting 31 flavors of ice-cream. Your father and uncle began this business and you were not a fan of ice-cream.

John:  Well I was. I grew up as a child being groomed to succeed my father. I’m an only son and I don’t have brothers so it was expected that I would one day follow in his footsteps. He owned and ran the world’s largest ice-cream company, a multibillion dollar company. He owned it along with my uncle. My uncle died of a heart attack in his early 50’s. A very large man, he ate a lot of ice-cream as we all did. When he died, I asked my dad if there could be any connection between my uncle’s fatal heart attack and the amount of ice-cream that he would eat. My dad froze, looked at me, and said: “His ticker just got tired and stopped working.” I saw the denial in my dad’s face and I realized why he would need to block that, because he had by this time manufactured and sold more ice-cream than any other human being that’s ever lived on this planet. He did not want to think that, that product was hurting anybody, much less that it might have played a role in his beloved brother-in-law and partner’s death.

But the reality is that the more ice-cream you eat, the more likely you are to have a heart attack, also the more likely you are to get diabetes; and my father developed very serious diabetes. And it’s not just Baskin Robins. In the United States another very large ice-cream chain is “Ben and Jerry’s.” Ben Cohen was the co-founder and co-owner for years and he had a quintuple bypass procedure at the age of 49. That’s how ill his cardiovascular system had become, that’s the level of cardiac distress he was in; and he also is a heavy set fellow who ate a lot of ice-cream.

I am not saying an ice-cream cone is going to kill anybody. But I did not want to be selling a product that the more you ate of it, the more you consumed of it, the wealthier I would be and the sicker you would be. I didn’t want that on my conscience. I wanted instead to shape my life such that I could be a vehicle for a more healing and a more compassionate world. Although I was offered the opportunity to be as extraordinarily wealthy as my father is, I walked away from that entirely and I told him, “I don’t want a trust fund, I don’t want an inheritance, I don’t want to live off of your fortune, because I want to seek my own values and I want to live completely congruent with that. I want to find my own powers and my own path in life and I want to follow the inner, the divine call that I feel. I don’t know where it will lead.”

I was a young man. I couldn’t say to him, “Oh, I’m going to write books that are going to be nominated for Pulitzer Prizes and become best sellers. Who knew that would ever occur. I only knew that I had a commitment within myself, a conviction, and that I had to be part of making the world a better place for all of life; and selling ice-cream just didn’t fit with that. So I walked away from it and I made a choice for integrity. It was not a choice my parents felt real happy about. There was an alienation as a result of it, although a lot of that’s been healed in subsequent years. The reality is that although I don’t have anything like the financial wealth that I would have had, you know if I had stayed with Baskin Robbins, I have an inner wealth, that comes from knowing that my life is in alignment with my heart, and I think that’s priceless.

The Benefits of Initiation

Excerpt from Master Ching Hai Lectures

After initiation the light from within will shine forth to show us the Kingdom of God, to lead us to our real Home. And we will find our true state of being, with such happiness that we never knew before in this world. We will overflow with all the beauty and virtue that we tried to cultivate, but never completely achieved before. The heavenly teachings through the inner language will revive all the wisdom that we possess, but were so far unable to use. Then, we will be the most satisfied person, and nothing in the world could offer the same effect.

After initiation, you have inside help and protection and also outside contact. Inside is when you meditate, you might see the Master helping, or you may see light, and feel good, comfortable and blissful. You will feel your wisdom growing more and more each day, and that your love expands to infinity. That is when you know that the method is successful, is very useful. Otherwise, how do you measure it, if everyone tells you to do something, to close your eyes and believe it, and offers you no proof? Proof, we must give you. Proof, you must demand. And you will have it at the time of initiation, immediately and continually afterwards, every day. You will experience miracles for yourself, when you are in trouble, when you have an accident, when you have no one to turn to. That is when you know God’s power. That is when you know you love God. That is how you know that God is protecting and loving you. Otherwise, how do you know? How do we know that God exists? What is the use of God when we don’t see Him, or don’t see the protection and help when we are in need? We must feel that someone is there. So, that is how you worship God, even more as a Christian, after practicing the Quan Yin method, because we will know what God knows, we see, we feel, we experience the protection, the blessing power every moment of our life.
